Offered is a very scarce, 1957, Cleveland Indians team-issued Roger Maris autographed postcard, from the slugger's rookie season. Maris was 22 years old when he broke into the Major Leagues with the Cleveland Indians. In his rookie campaign, Maris batted 200, with 14 homers and 51 RBIs. Always looking for left-handed power to suit the short porch at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees may have used their "Kansas City cousins," the Kansas City Athletics, as a conduit to indirectly obtain Maris. The Yankees and Kansas City owners had business ties, and Kansas City's club needed cash, which was plentiful on the Yankees side of the aisle, so part way through the 1958 season, the Kansas City Athletics obtained Maris from Cleveland, and then sent the outfielder to the Yankees after the 1959 season. Maris had a great 1960 season, hitting 39 home runs and driving in 112 runs, and he was the AL MVP. In 1961, Maris broke Babe Ruth's single season home run mark of 60 homers when Maris hit 61 round-trippers as he again took the AL MVP. Despite the then-Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick declaring that the new Maris record would bear an asterisk, because Maris, in the newly expanded American League schedule, took a 162 season to break Ruth's mark, MLB did not even have its own official record book in '61, and the asterisk was never employed. In 1998, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa both broke Maris' record, with 70 and 66 homers, respectively. In 2022, The New York Yankees' Aaron Judge broke the Maris American League mark with 62 home runs. Maris neatly signed the postcard in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The postcard has been encapsulated, and PSA/DNA has certified the Maris signature as AUTHENTIC AUTO. The postcard is in excellent condition.
