Lots of National League hitters have received "signature" Don Drysdale baseballs over the years, but unfortunately for those hitters the "signature" meant "trademark," and that hurt, because Drysdale's trademark pitch was an inside fastball that just might hit you, as the Hall of Famer did to a modern National League record of 154 hit batsman in his career. The presented item is a dozen 1989-90 era Don Drysdale signed baseballs, and luckily, the winning bidder will receive these baseballs pain-free. The 6'5" Drysdale was indeed an intimidating force in his 14-year career, all in the National League with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1956-69). Drysdale had a career record of 209-166, with a 2.95 ERA and 2,486 strikeouts. "Big D" was a 3-time World Champion, a 9-time All-Star, and he won the 1962 Cy Young Award when he won 25 games. In 1968, Drydale set two National League records: Most consecutive shutouts (6) and most consecutive scoreless innings (58.2). Drysdale still holds the record of six consecutive shutouts, but fellow Dodgers right-hander Orel Hershiser broke the consecutive scoreless innings record twenty years after Drysdale. Drysdale was a fine hitter for a pitcher, and he had a career .186 batting average, with 29 home runs, and he was occasionally used as a pinch hitter. Drysdale and left-hander Sandy Koufax gave the Dodgers one of the best pairs of starting pitchers in baseball history during the late 1950s-early 1960s. After his playing career, Drysdale became a radio/television commentator, and he passed away in 1993. JSA Letters of Authenticity state that all twelve of the baseballs are Rawlings (Haiti) Official National League (White) Model RO-N balls. Each baseball is neatly signed on the sweet spot with blue ballpoint pen. Eight of the dozen baseballs come with JSA LOAs and the remaining four baseballs come with PSA LOAs. The balls are in excellent condition.
