Displayed is a 1934 Quaker Oats Babe Ruth flip book, an item that allows the user, the "flipper," to see the Inaugural Hall of Famer both bat and field. The Ruth flip book was one of a number of Ruth promotional devices that Quaker Oats issued in '34. The flip book was not part of a set but was rather a stand-alone issue. The book measures 2.1x2.8", and it consists of covers and 60 pages that when flipped in one direction show the Bambino's powerful, classic big swing, and when flipped in the opposite direction, show Ruth fielding. 1934 was Ruth's final season as a New York Yankee. The Sultan of Swat was definitely on the downside of his career at age 39, but he managed to bat .288, with 22 homers and 102 RBIs. In '35, Ruth played only a half season with the National League's Boston Braves, batting .181. The flip book comes with a reproduction of an advertisement for the Ruth flip book, and the reproduced advertisement measures 3.3x4.1". In part, the ad states, "If you want to play like Babe Ruth, the Moviescope will help you." The flip book shows the wear of nearly nine decades and the results of having been flipped countless times. The book has darkened, there is some creasing, paper loss, and general wear, especially on the covers and corners - to be expected from long use. The offering is a great vintage item from the tail end of Ruth's career, and one can envision thousands of youths flipping the book to see Ruth's home run swing, again and again.
