Displayed is a beautiful, 1964 Winter Olympic Team USA parade jacket, as well as two pair of 1948 USA Olympic Team socks. Officially known as the IX Olympic Winter Games, the 1964 competition was held from Jan. 29 to Feb. 9, 1964, in Innsbruck, Austria. The games were almost not held because of a lack of ice and snow, and the Austrian Army saved the games by carving out 20,000 blocks of ice from a mountain side to create the luge and bobsleigh tracks, and 40,000 cubic meters of snow, plus 20,000 cubic meters in reserve, for the Alpine ski slopes. The Soviet Union won the competition, setting new records for Gold Medals (11) and overall medals (25). The United States finished in 8th place, with one Gold Medal, two Silver Medals, and four Bronze Medals. Stars for the United States Team included Terry McDermott, who won the Gold Medal in Speed Skating in the Men's 500 Meters, and Jean Saubert, who won a Silver Medal in Alpine Skiing in the Women's Giant Slalom, and a Bronze Medal in Alpine Skiing in the Women's Slalom. The jacket is made of an off-white woolen fabric, with a bulky matching knit collar, edged in blue and red to color coordinate with the United States Team's Olympic emblem. A tag in the neck of the jacket reads, "Lakeland Sportswear/Selected For Wear By The U.S. Olympic Team/IX Winter Olympic Games/Innsbruck, Austria 1964." A small tag attached to the above mentioned tag shows the size as 38. The red, white, and blue United States Olympic patch adorns the left chest. The jacket sports four large, white buttons down the front. Each of the side pockets also has a red, white, and blue knit edge, similar to the collar piece. The jacket is almost 60 years old, and it has a number of stains that are small or tiny. Otherwise, the jacket is in very good condition. Included along with the jacket are two pair of socks. Each of these four socks has a stamped marking that identifies the socks as "Adler (size) 12/SC Shrink Controlled All Wool Except 10% Nylon Reinforcement Original Size Guaranteed." These socks are also stamped "Official Sock Of The 1948 Olympics." The socks have some small stains in various places, but are otherwise in excellent condition. The approaching 2024 Winter Olympic Games, to be held in Beijing, and its surrounding area, in China, will mark the 60th anniversary of the Innsbruck Games, and the offered Olympic jacket makes a wonderful remembrance of those games.
