Rare nineteenth-century full baseball ticket, issued by the "Railroad Base Ball Association of Chicago," granting entry for a game between the "Fearfuls and Wonderfuls" held at the Lake Park Grounds on June 15, 1871. This is one of the earliest baseball tickets we have handled and we cannot remember the last time we have seen one that predates it. The ticket admits "J. B. Goodman and Ladies" to the game and bears the name of the club secretary, "J. J. Young," printed at the base (Goodman's name is handwritten in black fountain pen). J. B. Goodman was a relative of our consignor, and this ticket has been in the family's possession since its date of issue. Printed by Rand, McNally & Co. of Chicago, which would later became the premier printer of maps in the United States. The Lake Park Grounds, which was also known as the Union Base-Ball Grounds, was home to the Chicago White Stockings during the inaugural season of the National Association (baseball's first professional league) in 1871. Unfortunately, the park burned down in October, 1871, during the Great Chicago Fire. The ticket (4.75x2.5") displays a few tiny stains and is otherwise in Excellent condition overall.
