The third known complete set extant. A rare issue, it is by far, one of the top ten most difficult sets to put together in the modern era. The Mexican set contains the same 528 players as the regular set issued by Topps, except the text is in Spanish on both the front and back. It is one of the first football sets ever licensed to a foreign country for production by Topps or any other company. The set was released in two formats in Mexico. First, they came in a 2-card pack/36 pack box. This version included a piece of gum. Unfortunately, over time the gum left stains or residue one of the two cards in every pack. That fact alone makes this set a “condition sensitive” issue. 34 of the 528 cards have gum stains. Adding to condition problems is the fact that these cards were produced and cut on shrewd machinery in Mexico back in ‘77. Overall, the set exibits great eye appeal. The set features stars and rookies such as Largent’s rookie (EX-MT), Payton (EX-MT), Bradshaw (EX), Super Bowl XI (VG-EX), Payton/O.J. Rushing Leader (EX-MT, w/ gum stain), Swann (EX), Staubach (EX), O.J. (VG-EX), Stabler (EX-MT), etc. Accompanying this lot is an empty Mexican wax box and a set of 5 different Mexican wrappers featuring NFL players. The information on these cards is a mystery, considering this is a relatively modern set. No one knows where exactly they were released or how many cards were in the print run. Less than a dozen wax cases came out of Mexico to the United States.
