Displayed is a 1976 Thurman Munson personal golf club, a Toney Penna model 5 iron. Munson was a catcher who played his entire Major League career (1969-1979) with the New York Yankees. Munson was the Rookie of the Year in the AL in 1970, when he hit .302. In 1976, Munson was the AL MVP when he batted .302, with 17 home runs and 105 RBIs. His excellent defense also helped as the Yankees won the AL pennant but were swept in the World Series by the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds. Munson was a key part of the next two Yankee teams as the Bronx Bombers won the World Series in both '77 and '78. Thurman Munson lost his life on August 2, 1979, when the jet that he was piloting at the Canton/Akron (Ohio) Airport crashed when he was paracticing take-offs and landings. For his career, Munson hit .292, with 113 home runs. "T. MUNSON 1976 MVP" is stamped on the club head. The club is in excellent condition and does not appear to have been used. On the club head is "5," and "Toney Penna," and on the grip is stamped "pro only." Interestingly, in Feb. 2023, LPGA golfer Annika Sorenstam, of Sweden, became the first golfer and the first Swede to receive a "Thurman Munson Award" at the 43rd Annual Thurman Munson Awards ceremony in New York City. The awards are based on on-field excellence, community outreach and betterment to the athlete's sport. The offered 5 iron is 39.2" in length. The golf club was originally from the Munson estate.
