Displayed is a marvelous collection of signed Baseball Hall of Fame postcards from Perez-Steele Galleries. The postcards were created form 1980-82 and include 270 limited edition postcards. With the exception of a few non-players, the set consists entirely of National Baseball Hall of Famers. Dick Perez, the artist, formed Perez-Steele Galleries, of Washington, Pa. with Frank Steele and his wife, Peggy Steele. The cards are 3.5x5.5", and each features a watercolor image of a Hall of Famer, and also adds a smaller, sepia action drawing. On the back of the cards is space for a stamp and an address, plus the series number, card number, and serial number (out of a limited edition of 10,000). The back of each card also contains some brief career highlights. The cards are immensely popular, mainly because of the they filled a niche for postcards of Hall of Famers with Perez's superb artwork - with details so vivid and appealing that the player almost appears to be alive. The signed postcards include Hall of Famers: Catfish Hunter (3), Hoyt Wilhelm (2), Judy Johnson, Lou Brock, Frank Robinson, Billy Williams, and Early Wynn. The signatures are all written in fine tipped marker in black, blue, or green ink. The signatures average 8/10 except for the Judy Johnson signature - which appears to have been started with a black fine tipped marker that was running out of ink and then it seems that Johnson started over with another fine tipped marker and completed the signature in fine flowing black ink. Although artist Dick Perez works doing artwork for the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Perez-Steele Galleries has gone out of business, and the Perez artwork only appeared on the limited-edition Hall of Fame postcards for a few years, so the cards make wonderful collectibles, especially so if they are signed.
