Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, is the only person to have been a U.S. President who was not elected either Vice President or President. Ford, a Republican, was the minority leader in the House of Representatives who was appointed as Vice President in 1973 when Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned. Then, when Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, Ford took over as President. Ford had been almost universally regarded as an honest man of high character, but after he pardoned Richard Nixon for Nixon's alleged offenses, Ford was criticized heavily by many who accused him of pardoning Nixon in return for his being appointed Vice President. Ford later stated that his pardon was not "in payment" for anything he owed Nixon, but as a humanitarian gesture. In any event, Ford's popularity waned, and he lost his bid for election in 1976. Ford was a star center/linebacker at the University of Michigan, and he was a part of two Michigan National Championship teams. He even turned down pro offers from the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions in order to coach football as an assistant at Yale and then later attend Yale Law School. Along with Ford's signed photo is an 8.5x11" sheet of paper with 22 auto pen facsimile Gerald Ford signatures, to be used as samples for his facsimile signatures. The actual Ford signature is on the bottom of the 5x7" black and white photo. Ford's signature is bold and neatly written in black marker.
