Bill Russell was an amazing winner, an accumulator of championships. The 6'10" center's college team, the University of San Francisco Dons, won two National Championships, in 1955 and '56. Then Russell led the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team to the Gold Medal in 1956, and then the Hall of Famer helped the Boston Celtics to 11 NBA crowns in 13 seasons, (the last two as a player-coach) tied with Henri Richard of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team for the most championships in any North American team sport. Presented is a Russell signed booklet called "Fine Points of Basketball Defense." Russell revolutionized defense, often acting as a kind of free safety on the court, leaving his man to stop opposing players headed to the hoop. In the NBA, Russell averaged 15.1 PPG and 22.5 TRB, an incredible total rebound total. The offered booklet, measuring 3.9x5.5", is a detailed 10-page guide to playing defense. The booklet has illustrations and instruction. Individual and team defense, rebounding, positioning, stopping the dribble, stopping the fast break and guarding the pivot are just some of the topics that are discussed. The booklet has Russell's signature, in 9/10 blue Sharpie, in blue ink. In addition, an 8x10" Russell hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity, with his image, in 9/10 blue Sharpie. The COA states that the product, a "Bill Russell pamphlet 76 Union Oil" is an authorized 30th Anniversary Bill Russell product. The 30th Anniversary refers to Russell's final season and his 11 Championships. The cover of the booklet has a very small tear of slightly over an inch down the "spine" and there is some darkening of the booklet because of the passage of time. Otherwise, the pamphlet is in Good condition. The signed booklet, with its instruction on basketball defense, makes a wonderful memento to basketball's first master of defense, the great Bill Russell.
