Bank check, dated October 25, 1880, signed by legendary Civil War commander Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914). The check, drawn on the "J. B. Brown & Sons" bank of Portland, Maine, is made out to "A. Mitchell" in the amount of "Twenty" dollars. Signed "Joshua L. Chamberlain" in black fountain pen (grading 8/10) along the base. Chamberlain is famous for his historic exploits at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. As commander of the 20th Maine Regiment, Chamberlain's regiment found itself out of ammunition after prolonged protection of the Union flank at Little Round Top. Undaunted, Chamberlain ordered his regiment to mount a bayonet charge, which succeeded in dislodging its attackers and allowed for the flank to be secured. Chamberlain, who was wounded six times in battle during the Civil War, was later promoted to Brigadier General and received the Confederate surrender of arms at Appomattox on April 12, 1865. After the war, Chamberlain served four terms as Governor of Maine and later became president of Bowdouin College. The check (6.25x2.75"), which bears a two-cent U. S. Internal Revenue stamp, displays several moderate creases. Mounted and framed together with a photo of Chamberlain (modern print) and a descriptive plaque. Total dimensions: 19x12". Full LOA from PSA. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
