Extremely rare and almost impossible to obtain are tickets evidencing horse racing wagers placed at leading poolrooms and racetracks during the latter part of the nineteenth century. All are in excellent plus to near mint condition. Paris Mutuels - 2 Introduced by Leonard Jerome to his Jerome Park racetrack in the early 1870s after a visit to France. Odds were determined after the race ended. Racegoers distrusted the machines used to record wagers and they were soon discarded. Included are two examples: 1 - 1873 blue 244, # 1025 (JC symbol on reverse), & 2 — 1873 green 247, # 1020 with JC symbol. Poolroom tickets - 2'S These were used to place bets at leading racetracks in America including Jerome Park, Coney Island Jockey Club, and Morris Park. Most are from top poolsellers in NYC and from prominent out of town gambling houses. They include Appleby & Johnson, Cridge & Co., Gloucester Turf Exchange, Fox & Co., Kentucky Horse Exchange, Powers & Co., Kelly & Bliss plus others. One from T.F. Eagan & Son is an 1892 play or pay wager that means you lose your money if the horse doesn’t start for whatever reason, even a scratch.
