A unique opportunity to own extremely rare photographs of the American 2-yo & 3-yo champion, Zev, and the English champion, Papyrus. Zev won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1923 and defeated the Epsom Derby winner, Papyrus, in the long awaited match race at Belmont Park on October 20, 1923. Zev named American H.O.Y. 1) Zev winning the Paumonok Handicap on opening day at Jamaica, May 9, 1923, taken by International Newsreel. Jockey L. Fator was up. 2) Photo, by Pacific and Atlantic, showing Zev winning the Paumonok. This shot is from the opposite side of the track, on the grandstand side, whereas the prior photo was taken from the inside rail. A few weeks later Zev won the Kentucky Derby on May 19, not the first Saturday in May as the Derby has been run for many decades. In fact, The Preakness, now the 2" jewel of the Triple Crown, was run one week earlier on the twelfth. 3) “Going to the Post” by Pacific & Atlantic Photos, Inc. All 21 horses in the 1923 Kentucky Derby are all lined up at the start without a mechanical starting gate. 4) Zev, with Earl Sande aboard, in the winner’s circle after beating In Memoriam in a match race at Churchill Downs on November 17, 1923. The photograph was taken by International News, a unit of King Features. 5) Start of the Zev/Papyrus match by Pacific & Atlantic. Article by the NY Times is included along with a print that appeared in the Turf & Sport Digest. The print is a condensed version of this original photograph. 6) Finish of the Zev/Papyrus match with the former winning by 5 lengths under Sande. Underwood Photo. 7) Underwood Photo of jockey Sande after winning match against Papyrus. 8) Photograph of Papyrus by International Newsreel walking right with rider. 9) Pacific & Atlantic photo of Papyrus arriving on American soil for the first time in. 10) Seven (7) pictures of the Zev/Papyrus race from The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News magazine dated November 5, 1923. 11) Cover page of Mid-week Pictorial dated November 1, 1923, featuring two pictures of the famous race plus winning jockey Earl Sande. These photographs by early and noted filmmakers are near impossible to find and especially in the condition presented. Match races between outstanding thoroughbreds are eagerly sought by collectors and these items are an integral part of thoroughbred racing history, one year shy of each being 100 years old.
