Although Mickey Mantle's name is almost synonymous with New York because of his years with the New York Yankees, he lived much of his adult life in Texas. In 1974, the Lone Star State honored Mantle by presenting him with this special honorary police badge The gold-colored badge features the enameled Texas state seal in the center, with the engraved lettering reading "Mickey C. Mantle/Hall of Fame 1974/N. Y. Yankees/7." We are very familiar with this badge because it first entered the hobby in 1997, when it appeared as Lot 171 in Lelands' sale of Greer Johnson's Mickey Mantle collection (Greer Johnson was Mantle's longtime agent). It has been consigned to this auction by the original purchaser in 1997 and is therefore basically new to the hobby. The metal badge (2.25x3.25") displays only light tarnishing and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. It his housed in a leather wallet that also includes Mantle's business card from Mickey Mantle's Restaurant in New York. Accompanied by the original 1997 Lelands LOA signed by Greer Johnson attesting to the badge's provenance.
