"Sometimes I think the Lord has kept me on the earth so long as He has so I can bear witness to the Negro Leagues," said Hall of Famer Buck O'Neil. Presented is a wonderful offering: A panoramic photo of the 1941 Kansas City Monarchs, that year's Negro American League Champions, signed in the 1970s by Buck O'Neil and two other '41 Monarch players. The Monarchs played in the Negro Leagues longer than any other team. They were in the Negro National League from 1920-1931, were an independent team from 1932-36, and played in the Negro American League from 1937-61. Players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame: Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, Ernie Banks, Hilton Smith, Cool Papa Bell, Andy Cooper, Bullet Joe Rogan, Cristobel Torriente, Buck O'Neil (as an executive), Turkey Stearnes, Jose Mendez, and Bill Foster. Other notable players were Elston Howard, Connie Johnson, Hank Thompson, and Quincy Troupe. The signed photo, measuring approx. 6.5x16.5", is matted and framed to approx. 12x22". Buck O'Neil, famous not only for his playing and managing in the Negro Leagues and as being the Major Leagues' first African American coach (with the Chicago Cubs), but for his stellar commentary on Ken Burns award-winning documentary Baseball. O'Neil signed under his photo (fourth from right). Also signing the team photo was Connie Johnson, (later a Major League pitcher) second from right, and Allen "Lefty" Bryant (fourth from left). All three signatures are neatly signed in ink or marker. Hall of Famer Satchel Paige is on the far right, playing manager Newt Allen is on the far left, and Hall of Famer Hilton Smith is eighth from left. The photo is in excellent condition. The offering makes a fine collectible of the great Kansas City Monarchs, and of Buck O'Neil, the much respected and beloved spokesman for baseball in the Negro Leagues.
