Spalding "Joe DiMaggio" League baseball signed in black fountain pen by the following nine members of the 1939 World Champion New York Yankees: Gehrig (grading 4/10), Dickey, Ruffing, Crosetti, Hadley, Ferrell (sweet spot), Pearson, Rolfe, and Hildebrand. (The signatures of McCarthy, Powell, Gomez, and Jorgens have been deemed "clubhouse" examples by PSA.) The date, "1939," is written in black fountain pen below Ferrell's signature on the sweet spot. Signatures range from 4/10 to 7/10, averaging 5/10. Excellent to Mint condition.
1939 New York Yankees team-signed balls featuring an authentic Gehrig signature are exceedingly rare. This is just the fourth we have offered in the past twenty-four years and we have seen few other examples at auction during that time. Gehrig appeared in only eight games that season after taking himself out of the lineup on May 2nd. Seven weeks later he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the disease which took his life just two years later. It should be noted that in addition to the year printed on the ball, the combination of signers also pinpoints it to the 1939 season. Full LOA from PSA.
