Jim Craig was the "Miracle on Ice" goalie for the United States Olympic Hockey Team when the Americans defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team in the 1980 Olympics. That game is one of the most famous sporting events in United States' history. Displayed is a very rare Jim Craig Atlanta Flames game used goalie stick that was used by Craig soon after the 1980 Olympics. Craig is a Massachusetts native, and he was the goalie on the Boston University team that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship in 1978. Craig became an American hero in the 1980 Olympics as he stopped 36 of 39 shots on goal in the "Miracle on Ice" game, including shots in the final minutes as the Americans were hanging on while trying to protect the team's 4-3 lead. After the game, Craig draped a United States flag over his shoulders, and the photo of that moment became famous. Two days later, Craig was again outstanding in goal as the United States defeated Sweden 4-2 to claim the goal medal. Craig joined the NHL's Atlanta Flames shortly after the 1980 Olympics. He played in four games in the season in which this stick was used in at least one of the games, compiling a 1-2-1 record with a GAA of 3.79. In the next season, Craig went back to his home state to play for the Boston Bruins. As Boston's back-up goalie, Craig appeared in 23 games, with a 9-7-6 record and a GAA of 3.68. Craig concluded his professional career by playing in three games in 1984 for the Minnesota North Stars. The offering is a very rare game used stick and a must for anyone who collects memorabilia from the "Miracle on Ice." The stick shows fine use, with original tape on the paddle and butt end. A section of wood about 3.5" long and about 0.2" wide has chipped off from the top of the blade. The stick is uncracked and is signed on the shaft by Bobby Lalonde and a number of other players on the 1979-80 Flames team. Many of these signatures, signed in thin-tipped marker in red ink, are illegible and many of these signatures have blurred and can no longer be identified. "CRAIG" is stamped on the shaft. The real value in this offering is that the presented game used goalie stick was used in the NHL by Jim Craig, one of the great heroes of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice." This stick is a must item for anyone who collects memorabilia from the "Miracle on Ice."
