Trio of checks signed by Ed Barrow, plus a handwritten note by Barrow, all relating to payments due to the Estate of Harry Frazee (former Boston Red Sox owner). Each of the items has been individually encapsulated by PSA with the respective signature and/or handwriting certified as "Authentic." All the checks (8.25x3") are bank checks drawn on the "Corn Exchange Bank Trust Company of New York" and have been signed in black fountain pen (grading 9/10 on average) by "E. G. Barrow." Unless otherwise noted, the checks all display bank cancellation stamps, a spindle hole, paperclip impressions, and one or more folds. Very Good condition overall.

1) Check, dated September 26, 1930, made out to the "Estate of H. H. Frazee" in the amount of $1,000. The note in the lower left reads "Payment on account loan note." Small edge tear along the top border. 2) Check dated March 7, 1932, made out to "Mrs. Eric Zardo" in the amount of $500. The note in the lower left reads "Account refund on H. H. Frazee loan note." 3) Check, dated May 11, 1932, made out to the "Estate of H. H. Frazee" in the amount of $1,000. The note in the lower left reads "Payment in full of balance due on Frazee note." 4) Sheet of unlined paper bearing handwritten pencil notations in the hand of Ed Barrow. The note reads "$1,000 in May 1930/Larch Bank/to Frazee Estate/First Payment." The sheet has been trimmed to its current dimensions (5x3") and displays a few moderate creases and a paperclip impression. 

These items, along with nearly every other surviving document relating to the sale of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, originates from the estate of Ed Barrow, who was manager of the Boston Red Sox at the time of the transaction, and soon after became the longtime business manager/general manager of the New York Yankees. Many years after Barrow's death, legendary collector Barry Halper purchased his entire business archive from the Barrow family, which included dozens of documents relating to Boston's historic sale of Ruth. (Barry Halper's collection is considered by many to have been the finest private baseball-memorabilia collection ever assembled.) In 1999, Halper sold nearly his entire collection at auction through Sotheby's in New York (the collection was so vast that it took over a week of twice-daily live auctions and three months of weekly internet sales to liquidate it). Lot 560 in the live-auction portion of the sale featured a large collection of documents relating to the sale of Ruth, from which these four pieces, as well as every other "sale of Ruth" document featured in this auction, originates. The entire content of Lot 560 in the 1999 Sotheby's Halper Collection auction has been consigned to this auction by the original purchaser, making this just the third time since 1919 that these historically significant items will have traded hands.
