A total of 3,636 runners participated in the torch run, which started in New York and ended in Los Angeles. The run to Los Angeles covered more than 9,320 miles and concluded with Rafer Johnson lighting the main arena torch to start the games.

The middle band is engraved "Games of the/XXIIIrd Olympiad/Los Angeles 1984." The bottom band displays the initials and logo of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee (LAOOC), as well as the name of the torch manufacturer ("Turner Ind. Inc."). A tan leather covering encases the handle. The torch displays light-to-moderate use, including a few light scratches to the metal components, and remains in Excellent condition.
