Following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, the NBA helped raise money for the families of the fallen firefighters by selling special team-signed commemorative balls at charity auctions. Only twelve of these special charity balls were produced, with four NBA teams selected to sign three balls each, including the Los Angeles Lakers. Offered here is one of the three "9-11" balls signed by the eventual NBA Champions. The Spalding official NBA basketball features the Maltese Cross emblem of the "New York State Professional Fire Fighters" stamped on a side panel. On the panel directly below the emblem is the stamped lettering "L729/L921/L1280/September 11, 2001." The ball has been signed in either black marker, gold paint pen, or silver paint pen by thirteen members of the Los Angeles Lakers, including Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Rick Fox, Mitch Richmond, Brian Shaw, Mark Madsen, Samaki Walker, Derek Fisher, Devean George, Robert Horry, Lindsey Hunter, and Slava Medvedenko.
