Presented is a ticket stub to the New York Mets' first home game at Shea Stadium. When the Mets brought National League baseball back to New York City in 1962, the expansion team played its first two seasons in the famed Polo Grounds. In the club's third season in 1964, the Mets moved into new Shea Stadium, so new that on the day of the team's first home game at Shea, on April 17th, parts of the outfield fence were still being painted, and workers were dealing with drainage problems. A crowd of 50,312 attended the home opener and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates had a line-up that included three future Hall of Famers: Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, and Bill Mazeroski. The Mets started right-handed pitcher Jack Fisher and the Pirates countered with another right-hander, Bob Friend. Willie Stargell hit the first Shea Stadium home run, and Friend went the distance, giving up three earned runs in a 4-3 Pirate win. Fisher took the loss for the Mets. The first Mets run at Shea was on a hit by Jesse Gonder to drive in Ron Hunt. The Mets had finished in last place (10th) in the National League in the team's first two seasons, and they finished last again in the club's first season at Shea. In '64, the Mets were still managed by Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel. In the Mets sixth year at Shea (1969), the Miracle Mets won the World Series. Over the years, Shea was host to boxing, soccer and football, to name a few. In fact, in 1975, Shea was the only stadium to ever house two pro football teams and two baseball teams in the same year. Shea's regular home teams, the Mets and the New York Jets, were joined for one year by the Yankee Stadium home teams, the Yankees and the New York Football Giants, when Yankee Stadium was being remodeled. Shea Stadium was demolished in 2008 and now a parking lot for the adjacent new Citi Field sits where Shea used to be. The ticket stub measures 1.38x1.25". The ticket was for an upper reserved seat costing $2.50. The ticket stub is in very good condition, and it provides a fine connection to the Mets beginning at Shea.
