Exceedingly rare newly discovered collection of twelve St. Louis Cardinals baseball supplements issued by the St. Louis Republic newspaper, circa 1909. These twelve supplements, along with the twelve St. Louis Republic supplements featuring St. Louis Browns players that are being offered as a separate lot in this auction, originate from a recent find in the St. Louis area and for all but one, represent the first examples we have seen. Their rarity is such that they are not even listed in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and we have never handled another. While we cannot state with certainty, we believe the twenty-four supplements offered in this auction (twelve Browns and twelve Cardinals), represent the complete set issued at the time. Each supplement features a photo of the player, below which is a short biography and the text reading "Supplement to The St. Louis Republic." The twelve Cardinals players featured in this lot are Roger Bresnahan, Charles Achenbach, Fred Beebe, Jack Bliss, Robert Byrne, Rube Bliss, Steve Evans, Rudy Hulswitt, Ed Konetchy, John Lush, Ed Phelps, and Harry Sallee. Based upon the players represented in the collection, 1909 appears to be the probable year of issue. The supplements (9x12"), printed on thin paper stock, display a variety of minor flaws, including small tears and creases, which primarily affect the border areas. Six supplements (Achenbach, Bliss, Byrne, Evans, Konetchy and Phelps) display a tack hole in each corner that has been professionally repaired and the Bresnahan supplement has been trimmed to its current dimensions (8.5x11"). Aside from the restoration and one trimmed supplement, the collection is in Very Good condition overall.
