Presented is a remarkable collecting achievement: a near-complete signed 1954 Topps set. This set is missing the signed cards of only Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, and Howie Fox for completion. However, for Aaron and Banks, signed reprint cards are included, and for Fox, two separate cut signatures accompany the lot (one of the Fox cuts comes with a JSA COA). The compilation of this signed set was a labor of love for our consignor and took many years to complete. He began in the 1970s by writing to the players, and then in the 1980s he began getting the signatures in person as the signing shows increased in number. The is the most complete signed 1954 Topps set we have ever handled and we cannot recall having seen another that supersedes it. Nearly all the players in the set are deceased, so it would be impossible to even attempt to duplicate the work of our consignor, outside of purchasing all the cards (if they can be found).
The signatures of twenty-two Hall of Famers are featured in this collection (that includes the Aaron and Banks signed reprint cards) as well as many stars. Beside Aaron and Banks, the set also includes sixteen signed rookie cards, including Kaline and Lasorda, as well as a several "tough" autographs. It should be noted that for Ernie Banks an authentic unsigned 1954 Topps card (Poor condition) is included along with the signed reprint card. A separate unsigned Kaline rookie card (GD-VG) also accompanies the collection. Twelve cards have been encapsulated by either PSA or SGC, with each signature certified as "Authentic" by the respective company (the signatures for all the SGC encapsulated cards were authenticated by JSA). PSA Encapsulated Cards (7): #39 Lollar, #81 Hoskins, #95 Rice, #102 Hodges, #133 Baker, #179 Allie, and #187 Manush. SGC Encapsulated Cards (5): #10 Jackie Robinson, #97 Lane, #196 Jok, #204 Scull, and #211 Hoak. The signatures, scripted on the front of the cards in various inks, marker, or pencil, range from 5/10 to 10/10, averaging 8/10, except for #148 Trice (4/10) and 197 Rowe (3/10). The cards range in grade from Poor to Excellent, averaging Very Good.
