During World War II, military camp baseball teams were a source of great pride. In fact, a soldier's ability on the ballfield was often a deciding factor on where he was stationed, as commanding officers acted more like general managers and often "pulled strings" to acquire certain players or keep them from being transferred. Offered here is a Naval team-signed ball dating from 1942 that features the black fountain-pen signatures of nine former Major League players who were serving at time. The most prominent are those of Mickey Cochrane (sweet spot) and Bob Feller. Cochrane was the manager of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center baseball team from 1942 to 1944 and we can safely assume that Feller was the ace of the staff. The seven additional Major League players whose signatures appear on the ball are those of Ken Silvestri, Frankie Pytlak, Morrie Arnovich (sweet spot), Sam Chapman, Freddie Hutchinson, John Rigney, and George Earnshaw. A handwritten notation on a side panel reads "Presented to Colonel Merrill July 11, 1942 by Arnovich." The signatures range from 3/10 to 8/10, averaging 6/10. The official National League (Frick) ball remains in Excellent condition.
