“In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley, and Layden.” And with these words four men from Knute Rockne’s 1924 Notre Dame football team were immortalized in myth. Rare photo of those four players saddled up on horseback, wearing their full uniforms and carrying footballs is signed by all four players, Dan Miller, Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley, & Harry Stuhldreher. Each is inscribed to “John”, the student manager of Notre Dame football (1924-26). Miller’s & Stuldreher’s signatures rate a 7 out of a possible 10, while Layden’s & Crowley’s are light & faded, a 2/10. Slight wrinkling has occurred from aging as well as some discoloration.
