Presented is a gorgeous 1984 Olympic Gold Medal (gilt silver) sample from the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles, California. The 1984 Summer Olympics lasted from July 28 - August 12, with 140 nations participating in 221 events in 21 sports. The United States won the most medals with 174 and the most Gold Medals, with 83. A contributing factor to the high U.S. medal count was the boycott of the Olympics by the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. The sample medal was a Jostens' salesman's sample. The medal measures approx. 2.4" in diameter (60mm.), and "SAMPLE" is written on each side. With the exception of "SAMPLE" imprinted on each side, the medal is like that given to American track star Carl Lewis, who tied for first in the number of Gold Medals won in the 1984 Olympics with gymnast Ecaterina Szabo. The medal is in excellent condition, and it comes in a wood and Lucite display case. that measures approx. 6.1x6.5x1.9" attached to a wooden stand measuring approx. 3.1x7.25x0.9". The medal was designed by Giuseppe Cassioli/Dugard Stermer and minted by Jostens Inc. On the obverse of the medal is the Goddess of Victory, holding a palm in her left hand and a victor's crown in her right hand. Imprinted on the obverse is "XXIII OLYMPIAD LOS ANGELES 1984." On the reverse is an Olympic champion with a stadium in the background. The sample medal (and ribbon) makes an impressive Olympic collectible that will heighten interest in any sports collection.
