Roger Maris passed another New York Yankees outfielder, Hall of Famer, the immortal Babe Ruth, for the all-time Major League single-season home run record when Maris hit 61 in 1961. Then 61 years after that, yet another Yankees outfielder, Aaron Judge, passed Maris with 62 home runs in 2022. When Maris battled Mickey Mantle in the race to top Babe Ruth that 1961 season, the whole nation watched as Maris surpassed Ruth, won the American league MVP and helped the Yankees to the World Championship. Maris had another MVP season in 1962 and again was a part of a World Champion Yankees squad. He later finished his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, but injuries and illness affected his play, and he retired after the 1968 season. He was a 7-time All-Star, and a part of three World Championship teams, as his St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series in 1967. Maris was a superior right fielder who won a Gold Glove, covered lots of ground and had a powerful arm. On occasion, he would play center field. The Official American League Baseball (MacPhail) has a few tan shadows. Maris has signed the ball with his neatly written signature made with blue ink. It is on a side panel and is a great signature, an 8/10. The successful challenge this season by Aaron Judge to Maris' American League home run record refocused attention on Maris and his miraculous season of 61 in 1961. The signed ball comes with a PSA Letter of Authenticity.
