Presented is a beautiful sterling silver winner's tray presented by the New York Racing Association to Tartan Stables for the victory of Dr Fager, ridden by Braulio Baeza, in the 92nd running of The Withers stakes race - at Aqueduct Racetrack, in New York City, on May 13, 1967. The race is named after a famous owner/breeder, David Dunham Withes, who won the race in 1890 with his horse King Eric. The winning horse, a 3-year-old colt, was named after a well-known brain surgeon. Before a crowd of 50,233, Dr. Fager won the eight-furlong race in 1:33 4/5, at that time the fastest mile ever run in New York City by a horse of his age. The jockey was Braulio Baeza, riding instead of regular jockey Manuel Ycaza, who was serving a suspension. The Withers is a famous race that is considered a prep race on the way to the Kentucky Derby, and famous winners, in addition to Dr Fager, include Man O' War and Native Dancer. The nearly circular tray has an approximate diameter of 10", and the raised edges of the tray are approximately 1/2 inch high. The following is inscribed on the tray: "New York Racing Association/The Withers/Aqueduct/1967/Won by Tartan Stable's Dr. Fager/Jockey: Braulio Baeza." Underneath, the tray is stamped "Sterling 2300." The tray does exhibit some minor scratching, but overall, it is Very Good to Excellent condition.
