Presented is a 1989 Don Mattingly game worn New York Yankee jersey. For the first three years of full-time Major League play of Don Mattingly's career, he was terrific player, headed for the Hall of Fame. In 1984-86, The New York Yankee first baseman, known as "The Hit Man" and "Donnie Baseball," batted .343 (to lead the American League), .324 and .352 respectively. In those three years, he averaged 29.7 homers, and 122.7 RBIs, leading the AL in 1985 (as the AL MVP) with 145 RBIs. In 1986, he led the AL in both slugging (.573) and OPS (.967). Then, On July 4, 1987, while fielding grounders in pregame drills, Mattingly reinjured a back injury from his high school football career, and his career was never the same. Mattingly had three very good seasons from 1987-89, as he averaged over .300 each season, but his power numbers were slipping, and then from 1990 through the end of his playing career, his back became more and more of an issue, and his performance suffered greatly. Mattingly finished his 14-year career, all with the Yankees, with 2,153 hits for a .307 average, with 222 homers and 1,099 RBIs. The 6-time All-Star won nine Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger Awards, and he was the Yankee Captain from 1991-95. The Yankees home white jersey has navy blue pinstripes. The neck has a sewn-on tag that reads, Mattingly 89 1". In the year he wore this jersey, Mattingly batted .303, with 23 homers, and 113 RBIs. On the lower left front outside tail is a Wilson manufacturer's tag reading, "Tailored Exclusively for Prestige Teams by Wilson." Under the manufacturer's tag is a smaller tag reading, in part, "B X," with the remainder of the tag illegible. The back of the jersey has "23" in sewn on navy blue numerals. The jersey is in excellent condition, and it exhibits moderate use, with some wrinkling and sweat stains in the neck. Mattingly became a Major League manager - with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins - and he still has a chance to be a Hall of Famer since he is eligible to be voted into the Hall of Fame via the Modern Baseball era committee. The game worn jersey is a fine remembrance of a player who, before reinjuring his back, was on an express train barreling down the tracks to Cooperstown.
