Presented is an original August 9, 1957, International News Service photo of New York Giants' Hall of Famer Willie Mays sliding into home at the Polo Grounds in NYC against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. The wire service teletype printing on the back of the photo reads, in part, "Mays scores, home again is amazing Willie/New York/Amazing is the word for Willie Mays of the Giants, who slides across the plate after coming all the way from first base on Jablonski's single in the first inning. Willie got credit for a stolen base, for he suddenly lit out for home from third on throw-in by Anderson, Philadelphia left fielder. Jablonski advanced to second on the play. Ump is [Frank] Secory, catcher Stan Lopata, and Giant player is Sauer (6). The Giants won the game 6-2, with Ray Crone getting the win and Hall of Famer Robin Roberts taking the loss. The photo measures approx. 7x9", and the photo has an uneven margin at the top. It's a great photo of a heads-up Mays play, but only 6,247 fans were at the game, as the Giants would only play about seven more weeks at the Polo Grounds, and the 1958 season would find the team in San Francisco. The photo has a small crease in the lower left corner and a few tiny creases in other areas, but it is otherwise in very good condition.
