B) PHOTOGRAPHS (23 all different): Ky. Derby (2), Winning various races (7), Winner's circle/ trophy presentation (2), Exercising (3), With trainer (2), In stable or stall (5), Walking with Shoemaker up (1), Other (1). (SHOEMAKER MISJUDGING FINISH) On two occasions, top jockey W. Shoemaker misjudged the finish of major races. Offered are the two programs, one is the Ky. Derby in 1957, also listed under Round Table (A. 1.), but included as a second program from that race. The second program is the May 26, 1956 Californian run at Hollywood Park. In this race. Shoemaker was leading in the stretch comfortably with champion Swaps, but thinking the race was over eased up allowing Porterhouse under Ismael Valenzuela to win. Shoemaker admitted his errors in both races. A photo of the Derby, shown here instead of with Round Table, clearly shows the jockey standing up in the saddle prior to the finish. A copy of the Derby chart and an article by Arthur Daley in the New York Times describing both blunders are included. An archival binder finalizes the lot. Overall, the condition is excellent. The programs have writing, basically limited to listing the order of finish, odds, and scratches. Many are rare and hard to find, especially Round Table's win in Tijuana. The photos are EX or better.
