Offered is a 1951 World Series Game 1 ticket stub. In this opening game of the "Subway Series," the New York Yankees hosted the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium in a game in which Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle made their World Series debuts. The Giants, who just the day before had defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in the deciding playoff game for the National League pennant via the Bobby Thomson home run, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World," continued their winning ways with a 5-1 victory over the Yankees before 65,673 fans. Mays started in center field for the Giants, batting seventh, and Willie went 0-5 in his at-bats. Mantle batted lead-off for the Yankees, and although he was 0-3, Mickey reached base twice on walks. Starter Dave Koslo pitched a complete game win for the Giants, and starter Allie Reynolds took the Yankee loss. Mantle was playing right field because Joe DiMaggio, in his final season, was playing center field for the Yanks. In Game 2, DiMaggio and Mantle would converge on a fly ball and Mantle would tear ligaments in his knee when his spikes caught in a water drain, an injury from which Mantle never fully recovered. In '51, Mays was the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year as he hit .274, with 20 home runs, and he finished his career with a .301 batting average and 660 home runs. Mantle hit .298 lifetime, with 536 homers, and he went on to play in seven World Series for the Yankees and he still holds the Major League record for World Series home runs, with 18. The ticket stub measures 4.75x2.25". The stub has been encapsulated and PSA certified "STUB VG 1."
