1912 T227 Series of Champions Miners Extra Back Ty Cobb card. Graded GD 2 by SGC. This is one of the rarest of all Ty Cobb tobacco cards and is notable for it's size compared to standard tobacco cards. Measuring approximately 2.375x3.375" it is more than twice the size of a T206 card and, in our opinion, much more attractive than Cobb's other issues from the era. Issued by the "Honest Long Cut" and "Miners Extra" tobacco brands, the colorful illustration pictures Cobb in a batting pose, while the reverse features a lengthy biography of the "Georgia Peach." Cobb is one of only four baseball players in the twenty-five card set, which features athletes from many different sports. The 1912 T227 Series of Champions is also the only issue to utilize the Miners Extra tobacco back.
As advanced collectors know all too well, T227 tobacco cards are seldom found in high grade. The reason for that might be related to their method of distribution. Many believe that the cards were issued in pouches of tobacco, not packs, so they were basically unprotected from handling wear. Whatever the reason, the offered card is no exception, but despite the expected flaws, including a few light creases and tobacco stain on the reverse, the card retains outstanding eye appeal and is one of he finer examples we have seen. It should also be noted that of the 39 examples listed in the SGC Population Report, only eleven have been graded higher. This is an outstanding example of this seldom-seen Cobb tobacco issue and one that would be a welcome addition to any Ty Cobb or Hall of Fame tobacco-card collection.
