Type I photograph of Mickey Mantle - taken by famed photographer Don Wingfield - comes with a touch of mystery. The 8x10" black and white image shows Mick in right-handed batting stance staring off-camera. What is generally agreed upon is that it was taken at Ebbets Field, and was used for his "1951" Wheaties card. Some uncertainty remains involving the timing, as we have found information indicating that it was taken at the 1952 World Series, or in spring training of 1951. Of course, it would be impossible to get a 1952 photo into a 1951 card set, though it has been speculated that the particular Wheaties set was issued over a few seasons, making that date possible. The '51 date would fit properly into the timeline, but it may have been retro-dated to explain the aforementioned question about timing, though the Yanks and Dodgers did play exhibition games up north before the start of the regular season. Image shows some expected creasing with age but still presents magnificently, and Wingfield stamp is on verso. Not encapsulated but comes with PSA LOA (who also punted on the date, using "c. 1952") designating it as Type I. Please note that the "signature" on the photo is deemed as "not authentic" in the LOA, though this is still a significant image from a hard-to-find card.
