Rare original Type I photograph capturing members of the Boston Red Sox, including Babe Ruth, receiving the key to the city during their trip to New Hampshire in October, 1916. This photograph originates from a souvenir photo album presented to Boston Red Sox first baseman Dick Hoblitzell by the Draper & Maynard sporting goods company (the album appears as a separate lot in this auction). In October, 1916, the Boston Red Sox, fresh off their World Series victory over the Chicago Cubs, toured the state of New Hampshire as guests of the Draper & Maynard Company, which was based in Plymouth, New Hampshire. The team was feted at every town it visited, many of which presented the club with a ceremonial “Key to the City.” Research indicates that the presentation pictured here in this photo took place in Laconia, New Hampshire following an exhibition game against a local club. As one can see, each of the seven Red Sox players is in uniform, although the brisk conditions necessitated the use of their team sweaters or jackets. Babe Ruth is easily seen here in this photo as he smiles while looking on as the key is being presented by a local official. A huge crowd of fans can be seen in the background. The photo (4.5x3.5") remains in Near Mint condition. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
