Original Carl Horner cabinet photograph of Cleveland Naps outfielder Jack Thoney. The formal studio image captures Thoney posing in uniform as he gazes to the left of the camera. Horner's credit stamp appears along the base of the mount. Thoney's name, and the date stamp "Apr 16 1909" appear on the reverse of the mount, along with a few additional editorial markings. Despite that date stamp, this photo was taken in 1903. Thoney played with Cleveland in 1902 and 1903, but the uniform style shown here was worn by Cleveland only in 1903 and 1904. Carl Horner was the premier baseball photographer of his day and his Boston studio location gave him access to every Major League player at the time because the city was home to both an American and National League team. It should be noted that this very image of Thoney appeared on Horner's majestic 1903 American League composite display photograph, which is considered one of the most important early baseball photographic displays (an example of that display just recently sold for $39,501 in Leland's Spring Auction). The cabinet (5.25x7.25") displays an editorial circle on Thoney's image, light surface wear, and a tiny chip in the lower left corner of the mount. A stamped notation near the top of the mount (slightly touching on the photo) reads "Toned proof only, please give credit." Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
