Joe Judge was a fielding wiz at first base and a sold hitter during a long baseball career that spanned 1915-1934. Judge played through 1932 with the Washington Senators. Even though he was small for a first sacker, at 5'8.5" and 155 pounds, Judge made it easy for his infielders and he won five AL first base fielding honors. Judge hit .298 lifetime and amassed 2,352 hits. Playing in the 1924 World Series, he batted .385 and helped the Washington Senators to their only World's Championship. Judge was a roommate of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson. The Big Train was one out away from what became his only no-hitter on July 1, 1920, when the Red Sox Harry Hooper hit a hard line drive down the first base line that bounced and was snared by Judge with an outstanding grab. Judge then threw to Johnson covering first to preserve the no-hitter. The Washington Senators' Joe Judge is not related to the more recent Joe Judge sports personage, the former New York Football Giants' head coach. The bat is a Pre-Model Hillerich and Bradsby Louisville Slugger from the 1919-1922 period. The ash bat has a standard finish, and its length is 35.0 inches, and its weight is 38.3 ounces. The offered item is a near perfect example of a game used bat. It shows lots of use with many ball marks the left and back barrel. It shows a cracked handle that has been neatly repaired with two nails. Cleat marks are visible on the left and right barrel. Some fading letters are on the front barrel are also visible. The bat also shows grain separation on the barrel, which has been neatly repaired by vintage small nails. The bat comes with a PSA/DNA Letter of Grading and Authentication that lists a PSA/DNA Certification: 1B10375 and a bat grade of PSA GU 8.5.
