Pair of original panoramic photographs by Chicago photographer Fred Countiss, each picturing a different view of Wrigley Field on opening day, 1945. Both photos picture the game in progress, with one taken from the perspective of the centerfield bleachers, and the other from the grandstand just to the right of home plate. Countiss' credit stamp appears in the lower right corner of each photo. Although there are no identifiers on either photo, our consignor obtained these photos directly from Countiss, who at the time identified the scene as Opening Day 1945. The Cubs opened the 1945 season with a 3-2 win against the St. Louis Cardinals en route to winning the 1945 National League pennant. The Cubs then lost the World Series in seven games to the Detroit Tigers, which was the start of the famed "billy goat curse." One photo (taken from the centerfield bleachers) measures 13.75x6.5", while the other measures 13.5x7.25". Both photos display moderate-to-heavy creasing and are in Good to Very Good condition overall. Mounted and framed together to total dimensions of 16.5x20.5". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
