Original Type I photograph capturing Babe Ruth and his Boston Red Sox teammates during a visit to the Draper & Maynard Sporting Goods company in 1916. Ruth is the focus of the the photograph as he takes his turn lacing a baseball. This photograph originates from Boston Red Sox first baseman Dick Hoblitzell's personal collection and was taken from the rare 1916 Boston Red Sox souvenir photograph album that appears as a separate lot in this auction. In October, 1916, the Boston Red Sox, fresh off their World Series victory over the Chicago Cubs, toured the state of New Hampshire as guests of the Draper & Maynard Company, which was based in Plymouth, New Hampshire. The following January, Draper & Maynard sent each player a souvenir photograph album chronicling the trip. While this is a famous photo, and one that has been reproduced in books and periodicals, original Type I examples are exceedingly rare. This is the first example we have ever offered and we have seen only one other at auction (housed within another player's souvenir album). It is also an extremely early Ruth photo, dating from just his second full season in the Majors. The crystal-clear photo (5x4") displays a few small areas of paper residue on the reverse (from having been removed from the album) and is otherwise in Excellent condition overall. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
