Gold medal awarded to Meldrick Taylor, gold medal winner of the featherweight boxing event during the 1984 Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad. He was just 17 years of age when he won the gold. Approximately 2.5” in diameter, gold medal is breathtaking. Front is raised Roman goddess with the Coliseum in the background with words, “XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles 1984”. Verso is scene of winner being raised onto the shoulders of men. “Boxing Featherweight” is engraved into the outer edge of the medal. Hangs from a pink, blue and gold strap. These games were distinguished by a boycott from the Soviet Union and 16 satellite countries, a direct response to the U.S.’ boycott of the 1980 Summer Games. 174 medals were won by the Americans, 83 of those gold. Carl Lewis, like Jesse Owens before him, pulled off the amazing feat of collecting four gold medals in a single Olympics and was clearly the superior athlete of the events. Medal itself is in excellent condition, except for a few tiny chips off the edge and the gold plating is starting to come off the edge. Comes directly from Taylor.
