Vintage photo capturing former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson. The nattily attired Johnson is pictured on the street shaking hands with a uniformed individual as a number of men look on. Because he was an African American, Johnson was a lightning rod with regard to racial issues in the United States and he later had to leave the country to avoid being imprisoned for violation of the Mann Act. Despite the overt racism he encountered, he was still a major celebrity and, as one can see here, well received by many members of the general public. A Brown Brothers credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with Johnson's name written in pencil. The photo (4.75x6.5") displays two tiny corner chips at the base, as well as a few light creases. In Very Good condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type III Authentic.
