Original film negative, capturing Babe Ruth as a coach with the Brooklyn Dodgers, produced by renowned baseball photographer Charles Conlon. Ruth is pictured on the steps of the dugout as he poses for the camera. Ruth served as first base coach with the Dodgers for a few months in 1938 and it marked his final job in baseball. Ruth's name and the year, "38" are written along the top border, as are a few additional editorial markings. An illegible marking also appears in the lower left corner of the reverse. Accompanied by its original paper sleeve bearing the handwritten pencil notations "38/Babe Ruth/Brooklyn Dodger/Coach/Head/Just before he left baseball/39 Guide." (The "39 Guide" notation most likely indicates that this image was featured in the 1939 Spalding Guide.) Although neither Conlon’s name nor stamp appear on the negative or sleeve, the handwriting on the sleeve is unmistakably that of Conlon. The negative (4x5”) remains in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
