Presented is an absolutely charming Nineteenth Century Stevensgraph depicting vintage baseball. Stevensgraphs originated in Coventry, England and were first created by Thomas Stevens, who used the looms in Coventry to produce colorful pictures from silk. In this slightly faded Stevensgraph, titled "The First Inning." a Nineteenth century baseball game is depicted. Unlike today, note how each base is covered by a fielder positioned right on the base. The fourth infielder, the shortstop, is the only infielder who doesn't play right at a base. The pitcher is following through with an underhanded toss, which was done in baseball's very early days. The catcher wears no mask or shine guards. The umpire, in a suit, stands off to the side of the plate and the scorer is near the backstop. The spectators are well dressed, the men in hats and the women in their finery, and since the game is in the first inning, the players uniforms still seem pristine, lacking the dirt from dives and slides. The Stevensgraph measures approximately 2.5x5", the standard Stevensgraph size. The verso of the frame reads, "Levy Brothers - 665 Eighth Ave. Bet. 42nd. and 43rd. St. New York." Matted and framed, it is 7.75x10.5x1.5". The Stevensgraph combines vintage baseball with the highly sought-after Stevensgraph collectibles.
