Presented is a ticket stub from the game that contained one of the most memorable plays in the history of baseball, but the play involved neither a bat nor a ball. Instead, it involved an American flag at the Los Angeles Dodgers' home day game on April 25, 1976 versus the Chicago Cubs. The game was in the bottom of the fourth inning, when suddenly two men ran onto the field carrying an American flag. In left center field, the men began trying to set the flag on fire. Rick Monday, playing center field for the Cubs, ran towards the men as their first attempt to ignite the flag failed. As the men began a second attempt to light the flag, now drenched in lighter fluid, Monday grabbed the flag and carried it towards the infield. Monday later recalled, "First, one part of the stands, then another, and then another started to sing God Bless America - all together." Monday's "play" was huge at the time and is now legendary. "I still get letters every week about it," said Monday, over 40 years later in 2008. Monday played 19 big league seasons, mostly with the Chicago Cubs and the Dodgers. He was a 2-time All-Star, hit 241 homers, and was with a World Series Championship Dodgers' team in 1988, yet Monday, later a broadcaster, is mainly remembered for the flag saving grab. "If that's all you're remembered for, that's not such a bad thing," noted Monday. The iconic ticket stub has been graded and encapsulated as PSA FR 1.5. It is a prized remembrance, combining baseball and patriotism.
