Red-and-black stitched baseball signed by Babe Ruth in black ink (grading 6/10) across the sweet spot. Our consignor's grandfather, who was friends with Ruth, personally obtained this ball in 1928 and the family retains a photo of the two posing together on the field at Yankee Stadium on the day of its signing. As one can see, the “Babe” portion of the signature is bracketed with parentheses, which was a habit Ruth apparently stopped sometime near the end of the decade (the parentheses are never seen after 1930). The ball (no legible manufacturer’s stampings) is darkly toned and displays several moderate abrasions and scratches, but even against the dark backdrop, the signature remains clearly legible.
