Original Type I photo capturing pregame activity prior to a Giants game at the Polo Grounds, circa 1900 This is an extremely early New York Giants/Polo Grounds photo that predates the stadium’s 1911 renovation following a fire that consumed the entire grandstand. It is also a wonderful, seldom-seen candid image of typical pregame warmups at the time. A pitcher in the background, off to the side of the first base foul line, is throwing to a batter, while a player or a coach in the foreground appears to be hitting fungoes. Other players are seen huddled together talking in foul territory or on the field. A sign has been placed at home plate facing the grandstand that appears to read, in part, New York vs. Chicago. A small crowd has already assembled in the right field bleachers and the grandstand. Five Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with the handwritten identifier “Polo Grounds” scripted in pencil. The photo (7.75x5.75”) displays a diagonal tear in the upper left corner that has been repaired with clear tape on the reverse, as well as a few smaller edge tears and light creases. In Good condition overall. Culled from the Legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
