This offered 1953 Topps #254 Preacher Roe is among the finest examples on the planet. Elwin Roe may have gotten his nickname because as a young boy he was often riding in the company of his minister and his wife, who had no children of their own. He wasn't called Preacher because he was always honest - he was honest in his life outside of baseball, but on the mound, Preacher cheated. After he retired, he admitted the same in a Sports Illustrated story. He threw a spitball. In his early Major League career, Preacher threw a good fastball. After an off-field injury, he learned the spitball. His best seasons were with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 and 1951 when he was respectively 19-11 and 22-3. He was with three Brooklyn Dodger pennant winners and was a 5-time All-Star. The 1953 Topps set was beautifully done. Famous New England artist Gerry Dvorak was hired to do oil paintings of the players in this 280-card issue. The front of each card includes a colorful geometric shape that enclosed the player's team logo. The back of the card has a bio, stats, a Dugout Quiz cartoon. and a facsimile autograph. The vivid Preacher Roe illustration sets him in front of a light blue high sky. 1953 Topps high numbers in this condition are incredibly scarce. Graded by PSA NM-MT+ 8.5.
