Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey worn by pitcher Jim Rooker during the club's 1979 World Championship season. This is also a scarce style jersey that was used by the Pirates only during the 3-year span 1977-1979. The white knit jersey, with gold pinstripes, is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features the number "19" on the left breast and reverse. "Rooker" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are applied in black on gold tackle twill. A "Descente" label is located on the left front tail. Below that is a white strip tag with the jersey number, size and year ("19 42 79") embroidered in black. A laundry tag, which was adjacent to the Descente label, has been removed (a remnant remains), otherwise the jersey is original as issued. Moderate-to-heavy wear is displayed throughout. 1979 marked Jim Rooker's penultimate season in the Majors, and his seventh with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A dependable starter for nearly his entire tenure with the club, Rooker appeared in 19 games in 1979, finishing they year with a 4-7 record and 4.60 ERA. Despite his limited work during the regular season, the Pirates showed no reluctance in using Rooker during the World Series, where he posted a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings of work. Down three games to one, the Pirates called on Rooker to start Game 5, and he rose to the challenge, limiting the Orioles to one run on three hits over five innings in the Pirates' eventual 7-1 win. Rooker retired in 1980 with 103 wins and a 3.46 lifetime era.
