The Soviet Union & 13 allied countries boycotted in a reaction to the U.S.’ boycott (Moscow – 1980). This resulted in one of the most lopsided Summer Games in 80 years. The U.S. won a record 83 gold medals. The rising star was Mary Lou Retton. This was also the first ever privately financed Games. It resulted in a $215 million profit!
