This unobtrusive horseshoe pick used to clean mud and debris from horse's hooves belies its prestige. The small farrier's grooming tool was the personal pick for the mighty Forego, and was used regularly on what many consider to be one of Thoroughbred racing's greatest handicap champions. Born in the same foal crop as the great Secretariat (and finishing fourth behind him in the 1973 Kentucky Derby), the enormous 17-hand gelding ultimately became one of the most beloved and accomplished stars of the sport.

The plastic pick and attached brush bears Forego's name and originates from the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, where he lived out his retirement to the delight of droves of fans who came to see the popular equine veteran. The pick has been kept in protected storage for over 20 years in one of the largest racing memorabilia collections in the country.

Forego's accomplishments dominated racing's handicap division in the mid-1970s. The versatile champion overcame sore ankles and staggering weight assignments to win over any track condition and distance. His most notable victories include the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Gulfstream Park Handicap, Suburban Handicap, Marlboro Cup, Widener Handicap (twice), Carter Handicap (twice) Metropolitan Handicap (twice), as well as three successive runnings of the Brooklyn Handicap (1974-1976) and four successive runnings of the Woodward Stakes (1974-1977). Forego raced until the age of 8 when he was retired with a record of 57 careers starts, 34 wins (24 of them in Grade 1 stakes), nine second-place finishes, and seven shows with total career earnings of $1,938,957 and three Horse of the Year titles.
